Our own Emily Higgins and Lucy Weddell are not only raising awareness of how kids with disabilities need opportunities to participate in sport, but are also actually doing something about it!
Most of you will know Emily, whose lovely son, Sam, has several disabilities, but a never say never attitude! Sam plays netball for our club and has inspired Emily to start an all-abilities netball program along with Kris Pierce of the SDNA. This popular weekly program has the support of the SDNA provides the courts, free of charge! Thanks to funding from Bayside City Council and VicHealth, this program is continuing in 2019.
Lucy Weddell, who many may know as a Vampires coach, is also a swimming coach at Firbank Swim School. Inspired by Sam and Emily's drive to give kids with disabilities more opportunities in sport, Lucy, Peter Russo (Firbank Head of Sport) and Emily came up with the Firbank AllStars sports program for all abilities children. Firbank girls volunteer their time to help deliver the program and learn great skills in respect to being inclusive, tolerant and accepting of all.
We want to recognise Emily and Lucy for their hard work and campaigning for inclusivity in sport. Read more about this inspiring story at
